No — anyone can browse the map and read every article for free. You only need an account to post lore, comment, vote, or favorite things. Accounts are free.

Upvote/Downvote is popularity — how much people enjoy a story. The Accuracy vote is the community’s judgment of how credible and well-sourced the lore is. Accuracy feeds the ranking that decides which pins surface on the map, so credible lore rises.

An article (a pin) is one author’s account of lore at one location — a sighting, a haunted place, a local legend. A Topic is a community-owned overview of a legend that transcends any single place (think Bigfoot or Mothman), which related articles link to. Topics are edited collaboratively through suggested edits.

Yes. The interface is English-first, but you can write articles in any language, about anywhere on Earth.

Loremaps is a solo project, built and paid for by one person — there’s no company or investors behind it. Servers, the database, media storage, and map services all cost real money every month, and those costs grow with every new user and photo. Ads on the free website are what keep Loremaps free for everyone. If you’d rather not see them, Premium removes ads entirely.

Same reason as the ads: hosting isn’t cheap, and Premium is the way people who love the project can directly support it while getting real perks — no ads, more media storage, video uploads, article boosts, author insights, and a supporter badge. Every subscription goes toward keeping the servers running.

No, and it never will. Premium never buys credibility: no vote weighting, no accuracy favoritism, no moderation privileges. The only visibility perk is boosts, which are transparent — boosted articles are visibly badged, and the boost is temporary.

A boost pushes an article — your own or someone else’s — up the map’s visibility ranking for 7 days. Premium members get 2 boosts per month, and anyone can buy one-off boost credits. Boosts don’t stack, and boosted articles are clearly badged so nothing is hidden.

Lore at residential locations gets rounded, fuzzed coordinates — the map shows the neighborhood, never the exact address. Public places (parks, landmarks, roads) use exact coordinates.

No. Loremaps doesn’t sell your personal data. The free website shows ads through Google AdSense, which may use cookies to serve them — where the law requires it (e.g. the EEA/UK), you’ll be asked for consent first, and Premium members see no ads at all. Beyond that, your data is used only to run the site.

Anyone can report an article, comment, or Topic. Content that gathers enough independent reports is automatically hidden until a human moderator reviews it, and moderators make the final call. Authors of removed content can appeal.

Use "Send feedback" in the account menu (top-right avatar) to report bugs or suggest features right from the app. We read everything.
