According to local tradition, Araise Forest, on the border between Brittany and Maine, was haunted by a werewolf known as Galisson, a poor man from the village of Carbay.
His servant is said to have discovered his secret after seeing him vomit sheep's wool, crushed bones, and bloodied flesh following his nocturnal hunts. The story soon spread, and one of Galisson's neighbors stole the magical ointment that allowed him to regain human form.
Trapped as a wolf for a year and a day, Galisson came each morning to howl beneath his neighbor's door. He was relentlessly hunted by the wolf-hunters (louvetiers) of Araise Forest. At last, his neighbors agreed to return the ointment on the condition that he would never again "run the werewolf" (courir le garou), and Galisson recovered his human form.
