According to tradition, a person could become a werewolf after committing a fault, or through inheritance.After putting on their animal skin (haire), the werewolves gathered in groups known as garoutaines. The local vocabulary included the verbs garouyer and courir le garou ("to run as a werewolf"), describing their nightly wanderings.In Avessac, they were said to gather at a place recorded in the old cadastre as the Landes de Meleresse, between Penhouët and Catonnet.
