The sunken city motif is a narrative motif widely attested across Europe, characterized by the destruction and submergence of a town, city, castle, or kingdom beneath a body of water. These places are often said to remain intact beneath the waves, where they continue to exist in a hidden or enchanted state. Their ruins may occasionally become visible, while their bells, music, or voices can sometimes be heard by those nearby.
Traditions attribute the submergence to a variety of causes: divine punishment for pride, impiety, or moral transgression; the breaking of a taboo; supernatural intervention; or natural catastrophes later reinterpreted through folklore. !
