Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch , is one of the most famous cryptids in the world. The creature is commonly described as a large, ape-like being covered in dark hair and standing between 6 and 10 feet tall. Reports typically place Bigfoot in remote forests and mountainous regions, particularly in the Pacific Northwest of the United States and Canada, though sightings have been reported across North America.
Stories of large, human-like creatures have existed for centuries among many Indigenous peoples of North America, with various tribes maintaining their own traditions and interpretations. The modern Bigfoot legend began to take shape during the 20th century as reports of footprints, sightings, and unexplained sounds became widely publicized.
The term "Bigfoot" gained national attention in 1958 after enormous footprints were discovered near a logging site in northern California. Interest grew even further in 1967 when Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin filmed what they claimed was a Bigfoot walking through Bluff Creek, California. The footage remains one of the most debated pieces of evidence in cryptozoology.
Thousands of Bigfoot sightings have been reported over the years. Witnesses often describe hearing unusual vocalizations, finding large footprints, or observing a tall, hairy figure moving through the wilderness. Despite numerous investigations, no conclusive physical evidence has been found to prove the existence of Bigfoot, and the scientific community does not recognize the creature as a real species.
