Lyphard and the Dragon of Brière

According to local tradition, a terrible dragon haunted the northern part of the Brière marshes. To appease the monster, the inhabitants were forced to offer it young people as tribute.
When the dragon demanded the daughter of the blacksmith Lyphard, her father resolved to save her. He forged an extraordinary sword and tested its sharpness by cleaving a great stone in two, now known as the Pierre Fendue ("Split Stone"). Armed with this blade, Lyphard slew the dragon and cut off its head.
Following this legendary feat, Lyphard became the eponymous saint of the commune. To this day, the coat of arms of Saint-Lyphard depicts Saint Lyphard's sword alongside the dragon, commemorating the legend.
