Jean le Merle is a tiny magical being from Saint-Dolay, who, according to local tradition, lived in a holly hedge beside the Grippé Mound an ancient earthwork associated with the giant Gargantua.
According to a tradition collected by Albert Poulain from Mme Malnoë of Petit-Bezo, Jean le Merle could cross the Vilaine River to Rieux on his magical red coat (paletot rouge).
