These small supernatural beings were said to enter cottages at night and help women with everyday chores such as spinning wool, winding yarn, and housework.Although generally helpful, the korrigans could become overbearing if allowed to stay too long. According to local tradition, a woman, following her husband's advice, heated the iron tripod on which her familiar korrigan liked to sit by the hearth. Burned by the red-hot metal, the creature fled in terror, taking all the other household korrigans of Batz with him.This motif of the helpful but troublesome household fairy, attached to a particular family and driven away by trickery, is widespread in Breton folklore, but is especially well documented in Batz-sur-Mer, where several closely related versions of the tale were collected.Source : Guériff F.
