The Midnight Wagon is the Nantes version of the widespread Death Cart legend. It was said to pass every night through Place de Bretagne, its approach heralding death.
When the first automobiles appeared in Nantes, many elderly people, hearing unfamiliar vehicles driving through the streets at night, hid in terror beneath their blankets. Mistaking the sound of car engines for the dreaded Midnight Wagon, they believed it was the fatal omen of death.
