The Beast Jeannette is a phantom creature said to appear at crossroads and along the water's edge, particularly within the triangle formed by Avessac, Guémené-Penfao, and Marsac-sur-Don. One of its most distinctive traits is that it grows larger and larger as anyone approaches it.
Night travellers were careful never to call it the "la Bête Jeannette", but instead the "la Belle Jeannette", so as not to offend it.
According to a version told by Jean Debeix, the Beast Jeannette resembled a gigantic barn owl. At the Bruc Cross, near Guémené-Penfao, a particularly strong man accepted the creature's invitation to climb onto its back. It carried him high into the air, where he witnessed a succession of strange scenes—joyful, sorrowful, and terrifying—some of which seemed to belong to the past. The Beast finally set him down in front of the church of Guémené-Penfao.
