The Korrigan or the Extraterrestrial? A Changing Vision of the Supernatural in the '70s

Extraterrestrial / UFOs

In 1972, the local gendarmerie recorded the testimony of a young woman who was returning by moped from Chapelle-des-Marais to Saint-Joachim in the late afternoon. She reported seeing a strange being, which she first thought was a child wearing a white hood. The creature then fled into the reeds of the marsh.
At the time, some local inhabitants interpreted the encounter through traditional folklore, identifying the being as a korrigan (a Breton goblin or fairy). Younger people, however, spoke instead of an extraterrestrial.
This story illustrates a shift in the interpretation of the supernatural: a transition from traditional folkloric imagination to modern ufological imagery. The same mysterious encounter could now be understood through two different cultural frameworks.
