A Nantes legend tells of two boys who wanted to take part in the Carnival festivities. Unable to afford a mask, one of them stole a human skull from a cemetery and wore it on his head, even placing lit candles in its eye sockets to frighten passers-by.
The next morning, after throwing the skull back onto a pile of bones, he mockingly invited its former owner to supper.
That evening, the dead man's ghost accepted the invitation. He appeared at the boy's home and killed him for disturbing his remains.
