Legends from Swedish immigrants near New Glarus reported that magical elf women dwelled in the woods near New Glarus. They possessed magical wands which they could use to bless children with wisdom, kindness, and innocence, and cared after lost children.
The elves were lead by a beautiful queen. One legend in specific told of a child who had been frightened by a strange sighing sound and who fled out into the woods. The elf queen found and comforted this child, revealing that the sighing sound he heard was nothing dangerous, but was merely the night flight of angels, which flew over the world each night, lamenting the sins humanity had committed the day prior.
