In Brittany, within the Cornouaille town of Douarnenez, the site of Plomarc’h contains foundations said to belong to the palace of King Marc'h.
Legend holds that this king possessed horse's ears, which he concealed beneath a cap, and that revealing this secret inevitably resulted in death. From this point, several versions of the story diverge: according to one, King Marc’h systematically killed every barber who served him and learned his secret. It is also said that one such barber confided the secret to the earth; a reed grew on that spot and, when the wind blew, the reed sang out, "_King Marc'h has horse ears._" Furious and ashamed, King Marc'h reportedly fled to the Île Chevalier in Pont-l'Abbé, where ruins of his castle still stand.
