The White Lady At the time when the château belonged to the kindly lord Monsieur de Trécesson (whose only intolerance was toward poaching), poachers were active on his lands by night.
Lying in ambush within the castle grounds, one such poacher was watching for his prey. Hearing a noise, he hid in a tree. A carriage drawn by two black horses approached slowly and quietly. The party stopped not far from the poacher, and he made out several men carrying spades and pickaxes. They began to dig a pit at the foot of the tree where he was hiding. At that moment, two gentlemen stepped out of the carriage and roughly forced out a richly attired young lady wearing a white silk gown. With flowers crowning her head and a bouquet in her hand, she was clearly a young bride-to-be. She pleaded with her brothers to spare her life, but in vain; they declared that she had dishonored the family and was no longer one of them.
Once the pit was finished, the young woman was thrust into it and buried alive. When the carriage had vanished, the poacher, too afraid to attempt a rescue, returned home to tell his wife what had just occurred. She berated him for his cowardice, and together they went to Monsieur de Trécesson to recount the events. The castle gates were shut, and they had to wait a long time before anyone agreed to open them. Monsieur de Trécesson, who was in bed, dressed hurriedly and ordered that they be admitted. The couple explained the reason for their visit. Alarmed, Monsieur de Trécesson ordered his men to rush to the spot the poacher had described.
However, these delays had taken time, and day was already beginning to break. The tomb is opened, and when the young lady's face is revealed, she heaves a long sigh and drops dead. Monsieur de Trécesson has funeral honors rendered to her, yet no one ever discovers the reason for the cruel fate that befell the woman. Monsieur de Trécesson adorns the castle's chapel with the young fiancée's wedding dress, bouquet, and floral wreath. These reportedly remained on display until the French Revolution.
Since then, the "White Lady" is said to appear on the roofs of the Castle of Trécesson on full-moon nights. However, there are no known firsthand accounts attesting to the presence of this ghost near the castle.
The Phantom Players The legend of the Phantom Gamblers centers on a specific room in the castle: a second-floor chamber at the end of a corridor reputed to be haunted. A guest once decided to sleep there to test his courage but found himself unable to fall asleep. Around midnight, he saw two valets followed by two card player noblemen settle at a playing table in the room. One of them brandished a weapon. The guest eventually fell asleep, and the next day, he discovered a pile of gold on the table. He disputed ownership of the find with the lord of Trécesson, a conflict that escalated to the point of a (fictional) lawsuit before the Parlement of Brittany.
