Merlin is said to be buried in the Forest of Paimpont, confined within a richly decorated cavern for an eternal sleep. A thick mist veils him from passersbys; he is enclosed in a tower of air, or within a stone that spins upon itself.
Yet Merlin may be elsewhere, imprisoned in the trunk of the forest’s oldest tree… unless the entire forest is his prison and he continues to wander there, with Viviane by his side. Guardians of the magical realm, invisible or transformed, they shift their shapes at will: stag and doe, birds, butterflies, entwined trees. They are lovers for all eternity.
