Marble Point Concretions and Manitoussiwuk

Marble Point is a location believed by the Ojibwe of the Bad River Band as being sacred to the manitoussiwuk, or little spirits, gnome-like entities that take the form of little men. It is thought that felling a tree or taking game near this area is an offense to the manitoussiwuk.
The area is also known for smooth, round lumps of hardened clay known as "concretions" or "grandfather stones." It is thought that the manitoussiwuk create these grandfather stones during thunderstorms as evidence of their existence, and that each grandfather stone has its own spirit within it. Removing concretions from this location is also thought to be an insult to the manitoussiwuk there.
There are at least four recorded manitoussiwuk within the folklore of the Ojibwe: the little wild men known as the bagwajiwinini, the memegwesiwuk who care for lost children, the pau-eehnssiwuk who warn humans away from Lake Superior's mermen, and the mizauwabeekummoowuk who dwell upon mountain escarpments.
