From the color and size, he assumed it was a bear, until it jumped off the cliff and spread wings that looked about 20 or 30 feet from tip to tip. The right wing knocked a boulder loose from the cliff face, and he went back later and confirmed that there was a freshly fallen boulder in that spot. He lost sight of the animal after it rounded the bend in the river behind the cliff.
