In the Châteaubriant region, belief in werewolves (loups-garous) remained particularly strong until relatively recent times. Local traditions describe numerous individuals who were believed to transform into beasts, often after a curse, a transgression, or through the use of a magical ointment.
Among the most famous was Joson Brasdane, who lived on the Drouillays heath. At night, he was said to roam the surroundings of Juigné Forest and join another notorious werewolf: Galisson of Carbay, who haunted Araise Forest on the edge of Brittany and Maine.
Joson was also feared in the village of L'Alleud in Soudan, where he repeatedly tormented a farmer named Tennerel, who had revealed his secret. The werewolf would come howling beneath the windows or through the chimneys, climbing the stone stairways leading to the upper rooms, while the inhabitants hid trembling beneath their blankets.
The story ends with the death of Joson Brasdane: Tennerel eventually confronted him and shot him with blessed bullets, putting an end to the feared werewolf of Juigné Forest.
